How to Prepare for Your Scalp Micropigmentation Treatment: A Step-by-Step Guide

Taking time to properly prepare for your SMP session can make a meaningful difference in both your comfort and your final results. Below are a few essential steps to help you get the most out of your experience:

1. Clarify Your Goals
Spend some time thinking about the look you’d like to achieve. Collecting reference photos—such as before-and-after shots of SMP results you admire—can be a helpful way to communicate your vision. While your practitioner will guide you through the process during your consultation, having clear goals in mind ensures a smoother and more personalized experience.

2. Discontinue Topical Products (48 Hours Prior)
To ensure your scalp is in the best condition for treatment, stop using products like Rogaine, Toppik, or any topical concealers at least 48 hours in advance. If you wear a hair system, it should also be removed. This helps create a clean, unobstructed surface for optimal pigment application.

3. Trim Your Hair if Required
If your SMP style involves a shorter hair length, consider cutting it prior to your appointment. This gives you time to adjust to the look and may help streamline the session. That said, if you're unsure or prefer to wait, your practitioner can take care of it for you during your visit—no worries at all. Do not wet shave 24 hours before. Cut hair down to zero guard if you are not having a “Density only” treatment.

4. Cleanse and Moisturize Your Scalp
In the days leading up to your treatment, gently wash and moisturize your scalp daily using fragrance-free, non-irritating products. A clean and well-hydrated scalp provides a smoother surface for your practitioner to work on—think of it as preparing the canvas for the artwork.

5. Eat and Stay Hydrated
It might seem like a small detail, but arriving well-fed and hydrated makes a big difference. Treatments can last 1 to 3 hours, so having a meal beforehand helps keep you comfortable and relaxed throughout the session.

Final Thoughts
Each of these steps is a small but valuable part of your overall SMP journey. By preparing thoughtfully, you’re not only supporting a better result—you’re also helping to make the process as seamless and stress-free as possible.

Post-Treatment Care Instructions

To ensure optimal healing and results, please follow these guidelines carefully:

Avoid the Following:

  • Touching, showering, or applying any hair products to the scalp.

  • Do not wash hair for 4 days

  • Absolutely no dry shampoo.

  • Activities that cause excessive sweating (e.g., intense exercise) for 5–7 days.

  • Using shampoo during the initial healing period.

  • Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. (Brief sun exposure is acceptable, but extended periods are not.)

  • Swimming, saunas, or steam rooms for 14 days.

Note: If you must style your hair for work or an event, dampen a comb before brushing. Avoid getting the scalp wet.

After Day 4:

You may gently wash your head using cold water and a mild, paraben- and sulfate-free shampoo or soap.

Important: Please wait a full 4 weeks before coloring your hair after this procedure.

Signs of Infection – What to Watch For:

  • Swelling: Mild swelling is normal. However, if it becomes excessive, painful, or begins radiating beyond the treatment area, this could indicate an infection.

  • Fever: A fever may signal an underlying infection. If you experience one, please contact a healthcare provider immediately.
